12 Best Tea Tree Shampoos to Soothe Scalps
If your strands need a reset, tea tree oil might be the magic key your hair-care routine is missing.
By Arielle Tschinkel
If your hair has been feeling and looking somewhat "blah" lately, you might be thinking pricey tools and treatments are the ticket to bringing life back to limp strands.
Lots of things can impact your hair's health, from the aging process to changes in medication, diet, and stress, as well as styling measures and environmental pollutants—all of which can contribute to changes in your hair's texture and overall appearance.
If you're looking for a solid reset for your strands, look no further than tea tree oil, a skin- and haircare star player that can help rebalance your scalp when it's used as an agent in your go-to products, as Geeta Yadav, MD, board-certified dermatologist and founder of FACET Dermatology, explains to Oprah Daily.
Used for a variety of purposes (including as a salve for wound care, acne, and multiple types of fungal infections), tea tree oil is "an essential oil that has antibacterial properties, and in some concentrations, can also offer moisturizing benefits," according to Yadav. Its anti-inflammatory properties mean that "it's a great plant-based option for treating dandruff caused by malassezia fungus as it can help reduce overgrowth."
While it's safe enough to use for all skin types, Yadav does include one caveat: "I would advise those with sensitive skin to use caution when trying tea tree oil, as it can be irritating in high concentrations. It is best used diluted or, better yet, in a haircare formula." Thankfully, we've gone ahead and rounded up the best tea tree shampoos out there at all price points to help revitalize your hair with each wash. For extra "oomph," Yadav recommends Briogeo's Scalp Revival Charcoal + Tea Tree Scalp Treatment Serum, noting that it "can be used by people with all hair textures and works to balance, hydrate, clarify, and soothe the scalp with a blend of tea tree, charcoal, peppermint, and hyaluronic acid, while promoting healthy hair growth with biotin."
Keep reading to see our picks for the must-have tea tree shampoos you'll reach for with every shower.

EDEN BodyWorks Peppermint Tea Tree Clear Clarifying Shampoo
Not recommended for color-treated hair, as it can strip color

Best for Hair Loss/Thinning Hair
Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Scalp Care Anti-Thinning Shampoo
Works best used as part of the brand's three-part system
If you've noticed your hair looking a bit sparse lately, it can feel understandably distressing, even though hair loss and/or thinning is incredibly common and has many different causes. To help promote new growth and protect existing strands, this Paul Mitchell formula includes fruit- and plant-based ingredients to help boost volume and promote stronger strands with each use. It's also free of sulfates, parabens, and gluten, minimizing the chance of irritation on sensitive scalps, and it's safe for color-treated hair, too.
Though every one's hair changes with age (due to follicles becoming smaller and thinner, which is why you might notice your hair has lost its luster), hair loss in men becomes increasingly common—in fact, many men will be partially, if not fully, bald by the time they reach 60. This pick is packed with botanical ingredients (including tea tree leaf, peppermint, eucalyptus, rosemary, aloe vera, and more) to stimulate new growth and support existing strands, all in one heavenly scented shampoo.

A solid pick to combat and prevent dandruff right from the source
Cons
Some reviewers dislike the product's recent formula change
Suitable for all hair types, this hydrating formula includes tea tree and peppermint oil which are aces for flaky scalps caused by dandruff, while star players like jojoba, almond, argan, avocado, and camellia seed oils restore vibrance and softness to dry, tired strands.
If you've never tried a shampoo bar, now might be the sign you've been waiting for. Not only is it a better option for the environment thanks to zero plastic waste, this long-lasting bar removes product buildup and excess oil without stripping or drying out hair. Tea tree and mint adds a refreshing scent and feel that'll make you swoon with each use.
Some shoppers don't love the brand's recent formula change
Eczema-prone scalps are often extra-sensitive, so this shampoo will help nourish each strand and protect against potential irritants thanks to a powerful (but gentle!) blend of tea tree oil, coconut oil, manuka honey, and apple stem cell.
Color-treated tresses definitely need to be babied a bit, and you want your hair products to help minimize the damage done by salon treatments. Along with tea tree, this formula includes extracts of peppermint oil, chamomile, and silk, all of which give you the cleanest, silkiest strands you can imagine.
