So you shampooed this morning but see limp, oily hair staring back at you in the mirror by the time dinner rolls around? Sounds like you need to swap out your cleanser.

People with oily hair think they need to shampoo more, but shampooing every day can actually create more oil, says celebrity hairstylist Dominick Pucciarello. Over time, the wrong products—shampoo, conditioner, and other haircare formulas—can cause a build up of residue, as well as an accumulation of natural oils and dead skin cells, explains Erum N. Ilyas, MD, board-certified a dermatologist. "Exfoliating or treating this buildup helps return hair’s natural luster."

Aim to wash hair no more than every other day, says Pucciarello. And opt for a clarifying shampoo—a formula, sometimes also called purifying or deep-cleaning shampoo, specifically made to strip residue, including oil and grease, says celebrity hairstylist Michelle Cleveland.

Like other types of shampoo, there are tons of different formulas out there, so you'll want to pay attention to your specific needs—like whether you need an anti-dandruff product or one for thinning hair—when choosing the right cleanser for your locks. Here, dermatologists and hairstylists lend a helping hand, touting these products as the best options for anyone with oily hair.

Cons
  • If you don't like fragrance, you may not like the floral scent

Dandruff is a common reason for oily hair, and one of the best ways to fight it is to soothe the scalp. This shampoo by Aveda includes wine vinegar, peppermint, spearmint, and rosemary oils to tame an irritated scalp, balance out oil production, and restore your hair health in just a few washes.

Pros
    Cons
    • Some buyers say the bottle is too small

This hardworking shampoo contains lactic acid—an ingredient that regulates how your skin produces oil—while also addressing grease-building scalp issues like dandruff to eczema, explains hairstylist Trey Gillen. Just don't expect overnight results. "It will take a month or two to fully regulate the oil production, so make sure you have some dry powder shampoo on hand so that on days two and three you have something to absorb the oils in between washes."

    Best for Thinning Hair

    Nioxin Cleanser Shampoo

    Pros
    • Safe for thinning and fine hair
    Cons
    • Some buyers find the formula greasy

If you're experiencing thinning, Nioxin is "hands down the absolute best line of defense," says Cleveland. There are six different levels within this line of shampoos, each addressing a different phase of hair loss and each specially formulated to remove product buildup, minerals, pollutants, and toxins, she explains.

    Pros

    Cons
    • Application can be messy and tedious

"The salicylic acid in this product can help remove excess flaking and keratin buildup on the scalp," says Ilyas. Still, it's gentle enough for those with sensitive scalps—even those with scabs from picking or scratching. That's because this product contains argan oil to help balance out the exfoliating action, she explains.

Not to mention, it's safe for color-treated hair and daily use. It's also free of silicones, a toxic, non-renewable resource that's the leading cause of buildup and excess oil production, he explains.

    Sebastian Reset Shampoo

    Pros
    • Doesn't strip hair color
    Cons
    • It can be drying if you over use the formula

"Deep cleansing, or clarifying, shampoos work best for overly oily hair," says Cleveland. Her go-to? Sebastian’s Reset, since it's safe for color-treated hair and works hard to strip all that residue causing grease. Just beware: "Using this type of shampoo too much can cause you to strip too many essential oils from the scalp and cause a whole new set of issues, including dry and flaky scalp," she explains.
